Located on the broad alluvial fan of the Rimac River, Lima is the capital of Peru and the only megacity (7.7 million inhabitants in 2002) located on the western coastline of South America. The city was established by Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and became an important colonial port, linking silver mines of the Altiplano of the high Andes Mountains with the burgeoning Spanish empire. The true-color image above shows a patch of bright water off the coast of Chincha Alta, Peru, roughly 200 km (124 miles) south of Lima. The scene was acquired on February 23, 2004, by the (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Satellite. The bright yellow-green coloration of the water is probably the result of biological activity—possibly some species of algae. The waters along the west coast of South America are some of the most biologically fertile in the world...

About 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Lima, Peru, lies an enigmatic, 2,300-year-old ruin named Chankillo. Archaeologists have nicknamed the ruin's central complex the ''Norelco ruin'' based on its resemblance to a modern electric shaver. The building's true purpose long eluded them. Its thick walls and hilltop location suggested it was a fort, but why, researchers wondered, would anybody build a fort with so many gates and without a water source? Then in March 2007, two researchers, Ivan Ghe...

[image]Ferrar Glacier, Antarctica: Image of the Day - NASA -- NASA Image Of The Day
Remote, frigid, and often treacherous to traverse, Antarctica has always posed a challenge to the explorers and scientists who work there. As a result, remote-sensing scientists have steadily worked to develop detailed, accurate imagery of the continent--both to support research on the ground and to better study the continent from a safer vantage point. In November 2007, NASA, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the British Antarctic Survey jointly released a new image mosaic of Antarctica...

[image]Pine Island Glacier, Antarctica: Image of the Day - NASA -- NASA Image Of The Day
Just around the corner from the Antarctic Peninsula, the Pine Island Glacier has been the focus of scientific attention for many years. Observations over the past few decades show that the glacier has lost elevation and that the ice shelf's grounding line--where the glacier loses contact with the ground and begins to float--has retreated inland. Large numbers of deep crevasses are a sign that parts of the glacier are moving rapidly...

A chunk of glacier was threatening to fall into an Andean lake and cause major flooding in a Peruvian city of 60,000. A fissure has appeared in the glacier that feeds the Lake Palcacocha near the city of Huaraz, 270 km north of Lima. If the piece breaks off, ensuing floods would take 15 minutes to reach the city. In 1941, the lake overflowed and caused massive destruction, killing 7,000 people. The city can be seen in the left-center part of the image...

The Pine Island Glacier is the largest discharger of ice in Antarctica and the continent's fastest moving glacier. This area of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is also believed to be the most susceptible to collapse. The evolution of this glacier is therefore of great interest to the scientific community. It is an area of Antarctica which is experiencing rapid changes. The grounding line of Pine Island Glacier is retreating, the glacier is thinning rapidly, and its ice flow is accelerating...

[image]Compare the Size of Antarctica to the Continental United States - NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio. LIMA Data provided by: Patricia Vornberger (SAIC). LIMA data produced by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and NASA.
Antarctica is the highest, driest, coldest, windiest and brightest of the seven continents. It is roughly the size of the United States and Mexico combined and is almost completely covered by a layer of ice that averages more than one mile in thickness, but is nearly three miles thick in places. This ice accumulated over millions of years through snowfall. Presently, the Antarctic ice sheet contains 90% of the ice on Earth and would raise sea levels worldwide by over 200 feet were it to melt...
